HealthFort Wayne nonprofit Headwaters Counseling hits financial crisis, seeks help | Health & Science

Headwaters Counseling, a nonprofit that provides support for people with mental health, substance misuse and other life matters, announced today it faces a financial crisis and needs help.

The organization, which serves a diverse population, including low-income individuals, minorities, and the homeless, dates back nearly 100 years.

Over the past year, Headwaters Counseling has served 1,497 unduplicated clients and provided 12,102 services, with more than 1,000 clients benefiting from subsidized fees, a news release said.

The organization has come up with a “90-Day Stability and Recovery Plan,” in collaboration with a financial adviser, hoping to ward off any disruption in services.

Key elements of the plan include:

•Emergency Grant Request: The organizations is in discussions with local foundations seeking an emergency grant of $50,000 to cover payroll, benefits and operations for an additional 30 days.

•Collaborative Opportunities: It is exploring partnerships to temporarily employ some of our therapists, ensuring continuity of care while alleviating financial pressure.

•Strategic Assistance: It has enlisted the help of an attorney for documentation and process support should layoffs become necessary.

Headwaters Counseling said in a news release that community support is crucial to its continued operation and invited financial donations via text or through its website, headwaterscounseling.org.
